Winter appeals: how to plan for the cold months

How to plan a winter appeal: when to launch, what to ask for, telling the story with dignity, and keeping donors with you through the cold months.

Launch in October

Winter appeals usually run from October to February, for heating fuel, blankets, warm clothes and food in cold regions and camps. Plan from August so the appeal is ready when the first cold weather makes the news.

Make the ask concrete

“£50 keeps a family warm for a month” works better than a general call for winter help. Offer two or three amounts tied to real items, and a monthly option to cover the whole season.

Tell the story with dignity

Show people as people, not as cold statistics. Use images and words you would be comfortable with if they were your own family, and get consent for every story you tell.

Plan for the whole season

A winter appeal is long. Plan updates for each month, a push around the coldest weeks, and a link to Ramadan when it falls early in the year, as it does in 2027 and 2028.

Checklist

  • Appeal ready by early October
  • Amounts tied to real items
  • Monthly winter option offered
  • Consent for every story
  • Monthly updates planned
