Giving Tuesday for charities: plan a campaign in eight weeks

How charities can plan a Giving Tuesday campaign: the 2026 and 2027 dates, an eight-week timeline, match funding, the ask, and following up after the day.

Giving Tuesday dates

Giving Tuesday falls on the Tuesday after US Thanksgiving: 1 December 2026 and 30 November 2027. It is now a global day of giving, including in the UK, and sits just before the year-end giving peak.

Plan eight weeks ahead

  1. Eight weeks before: choose one clear goal and one project to fund.
  2. Six weeks before: ask a major donor or partner for match funding.
  3. Four weeks before: make the creative and the donation page.
  4. One week before: tell supporters what is coming.
  5. On the day: send updates every few hours, with progress towards the goal.

Use match funding

“Every gift doubled today” is one of the strongest asks there is. Even a modest match pot gives donors a reason to act on the day rather than later.

Keep the ask specific

One project, one goal, one number. Show progress through the day so donors can see their gift making a difference.

Follow up

Thank donors the same day, report the total, and invite new donors to give monthly before the year-end appeals begin.

Checklist

  • One goal and one project chosen
  • Match funding agreed
  • Donation page ready and tested
  • Supporters told in advance
  • Thank-you and follow-up ready
